How Does it Work?
EPS products are made from a naturally occurring, sustainable, organic fibrous material. The use of EPS absorbent products will not deplete natural resources, such as those made from Polypropylene, nor do they have any underlying health effects that have been associated with the use of similar products containing silica.
The EPS's manufacturing process produces a product which becomes both oleophilic (absorbing hydrocarbons) and hydrophobic (repelling water). Due to its fibrous structure, and our unique method of processing, it absorbs hydrocarbons quickly on contact by virtue of its wicking action. The hydrocarbon becomes encapsulated into the EPS material on contact. Once encapsulated, the hydrocarbon does not release. The oleophilic and hydrophobic properties make EPS products ideal for hydrocarbon clean up both on open water and land applications.
On average, the material absorbs eight to ten times its weight. Absorption results depend on the temperature and viscosity of the hydrocarbon product.
